Dating Guatemalan Women

It is very unfortunate that Guatemalan women struggle for their rights within a context of insecurity and violence.  It isn’t something new.  It’s something that they have face throughout the country’s history; and the struggle continues.  There has been internal armed conflict in past decades, and women, most of the indigenous, were victims of sexual, physical and psychological violence during all those years.

Statistics show that between 2001 and May 2009, there have been more than 1,500 women murdered and only in 14 of those cases were the perpetrators brought justice.  This impunity only serves to reinforce the patriarchal hierarchy in the Guatemalan family.  It sends a message that it is okay to harm women.

Guatemalan women face violence on the street, in the workplace and at home.  Guatemalan women, in spite of the constant threat of violence, continue to struggle to have their voices heard.  Therefore, should you decide to date a Guatemalan woman, it may very well be that they have never dealt with a man who has not been violent to them in some form.  It may very well be that you will have the most thankful person in the world by your side, or it may turn out that she simply doesn’t know how to react to a man who is courteous, kind and doesn’t feel that it is okay to be violent and harm her.

Dating Mexican Women

First of all, at Dating Latin American Women, we want to avoid stereotypes.  We try to speak generally without trying to pigeonhole the women of the region and make them seem something that they are not.

However, among the more non-stereotypical things, women from the countryside tend to be more conservative than their city counterparts.  This runs true throughout Latin America.  Several of our staff members are from Mexico, and they have lived both in the countryside and in the city.

In Mexico, generally speaking, women are not expected to take the initiative in selecting a mate for any occasion.  Be it going out to dinner, a movie or whatever, it is usually the man who is expected to approach the woman.  Even at a dance, it is the man who is expected to ask the woman is she would like to dance.  Women are not expected (and they generally do not) make the first move.

Most countries in Latin American are still years behind in the women’s liberation movement, so a man isn’t seen as a moron if he opens a door for or offers a bus or subway seat to a woman.  In fact, they gain points if they do so.

Mexican women, are publicly conservative and will often reject sexual approaches during the first weeks or months of dating.  They will no openly accept a sexual relationship without some form of serious commitment on the man’s part.  A lot of it is superficial, but that’s the way it is nonetheless.  If you pressure a woman too much in the beginning, you are liable to be quickly dumped, especially if the woman is not from a big city, young or inexperienced.

Depending on how the woman has been raised, how much she has been taught by her family to be subservient to the man, she might even be offended if she is asked to pay for half the bill on a date, if the man dresses too casual for a date or if he doesn’t do things that the woman considers romantic such as giving her flowers or sending a love letter or email.

Should you decide to date a Mexican woman, the best thing to do would be to talk to her and ask her what her expectations are, and for you to tell her what your expectations are.  It doesn’t matter if you are dating Latin American women or women from another galaxy.  The key in any dating is the level of communication you develop.  You cannot both be mind readers and try to figure out what to do by guessing what the other person is thinking.

* Guyana – Formerly a part of the British empire, but it is part of the South American Continent.

There are some islands in the Caribbean that because of the Spanish heritage and language are included in Latin America:

*Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States and not a country, but it is considered Latin American.

*Cuba

*Dominican Republic

There are many more islands in the Caribbean of course, but they are not traditionally considered part of Latin American culture or heritage.  They share closer roots and ties with France, Holland and England.
